The host committee for the Democratic National Convention has arranged with Goodwill Industries of Denver to have workers with physical and mental disabilities help assemble 20,000 welcome bags for convention delegates and media representatives.

Goodwill also will deliver the bags to hotels where convention visitors will be staying during the Democrats’ Aug. 25-28 gathering in Denver, the Denver 2008 Convention Host Committee announced Tuesday.

The bags will contain more than 40 items, all donated by various host committee sponsors. Host committee volunteers will aid in the project.

U.S. charges 11 in theft of TJX customer data

By Scott Malone

BOSTON (Reuters) – The U.S. government charged 11 people on Tuesday with stealing tens of millions of credit and debit card numbers from major retailers including TJX Cos Inc, in one of the largest reported identity-theft incidents on record.

The U.S. Attorney in Boston said those charged were involved in the theft of more than 40 million credit and debit card numbers from retailers that included: BJ’s Wholesale Club, OfficeMax, Boston Market, Barnes & Noble, Sports Authority, Forever 21 and DSW Inc.

Framingham, Massachusetts-based TJX, which owns the Marshall’s and TJ Maxx chains, was the hardest hit by the ring, acknowledging in March 2007 that information from 45.7 million credit cards was stolen from its computers.

The charges target three people from the United States, three from the Ukraine, two from China, one from Estonia and one from Belarus.

The ring, which authorities said was headed by a Miami man named Albert Gonzalez, hacked into the retailers’ computer networks to capture the numbers, which they then stored on computer servers in the United States and Eastern Europe.

They then sold the information to people in the United States and Europe, who used it to withdraw tens of thousands of dollars at a time from automated teller machines, authorities said.

“This case clearly shows how strokes on a keyboard with a criminal purpose can have costly results,” Michael Sullivan, U.S. Attorney in Boston, said in a statement. “Consumers, companies and governments from around the world must further develop ways to protect our sensitive personal and business information.”

Gonzalez, who is being held by New York authorities on another computer hacking-related charge, was charged with computer fraud, wire fraud, access-device fraud, aggravated identity theft and conspiracy, authorities said.

He faces life in prison if convicted of all charges.

TJX has agreed to pay more than $60 million to credit-card networks Visa Inc and MasterCard Inc to settle complaints related to the incident, which is one of the largest on record based on the number of accounts involved.

Democrats start VP bashing even before VP pick is made

DNC Launches New Website: www.TheNextCheney.com

Contact: Damien LaVera, Democratic National Committee, +1-202-863-8148

WASHINGTON, Aug. 5 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The Democratic National Committee today launched a new website, www.TheNextCheney.com that illustrates the most important thing the voters need to know about each of John McCain‘s potential vice presidential picks: no matter who he chooses, any ticket with John McCain on it means more of the same. As McCain himself said in 2001, “with a little more luck” he’d have asked Dick Cheney to be his vice president. The new site, www.thenextcheney.com, features an initial list of seven contenders poised to be the next Cheney.

The initial launch of the site features basic information on the seven individuals McCain is rumored to be choosing from, with profiles of Eric Cantor, Charlie Crist, Carly Fiorina, Tim Pawlenty, Mitt Romney, Fred Smith and John Thune. The site will also give voters an opportunity to sign up to volunteer to be a part of the rapid response efforts in their communities.

“After lamenting the missed opportunity to make Dick Cheney his own Vice President in 2001, McCain will have a chance to choose his very own Cheney,” said DNC spokesman Brad Woodhouse. “We think it’s important that the American people have all the facts at their fingertips when it comes to John McCain and his vice presidential pick. This site gives reporters, voters and activists a chance to review the record and see for themselves that, no matter who he picks, a McCain ticket means more of the same for families already struggling to pay out of control energy costs, keep their jobs and stay in their homes.”

The new www.TheNextCheney.com site is an extension of the DNC’s efforts to outline the real records of all the Republican candidates, going back to the first days of the primary season. In the coming days, the site will be updated with additional content and functionality, including new videos and information about additional potential vice presidential candidates.
